How to Beat the Winter Blahs, Reclaim your Energy & Get Ready for Spring
The months of January, February and March are difficult months for many of us.
The festivities from the holidays are long gone, the weather is freezing cold and the outside world around us seems to be the same dull shade of brown and grey.
Sunshine? What’s that? I haven’t seen a tan line since August.
For some reason, this week has been especially tough. With temperatures below freezing, it seems like just getting out of my warm cozy bed is a major accomplishment! Nothing is really WRONG, but my motivation to do ANYTHING (other than hibernate by the fire with a glass of cabernet) seems to have disappeared with the falling temperatures.
Welcome to the Winter Blahs.
The winter blahs are real, and they hit hard—especially for women over 40 who are juggling work, family, and life while trying to hold onto some sense of self.
I’m definitely feeling it. And I know many of you are too.
So how do we get out of this February Funk? Well, I’ve been doing some research and talking to my favorite health and wellness guru, Jessica Johnston, and here are some ways we can fight back!
We don’t have to just “get through” this season. We can take back control, shift our mindset, and step into spring feeling energized, confident, and strong.
How to Overcome the Winter Blahs
If you’re feeling stuck in a seasonal slump, here are some tried-and-true ways to lift your energy and bring back that spark:
1. Dress the Part—Even If You’re Staying Home
I am so guilty of throwing on the same pair of black leggings, over sized sweater and boots to go to work this time of the year. In fact, I’m embarrassed to say that it’s become like a personal uniform this month.
But I will say that when I’m feeling sluggish, throwing on a chic, confidence-boosting outfit instantly makes me feel better.
For me, even just stepping up my outfit a little makes a difference! My go to is Spanx faux leather leggings, a blazer in a fun pop of color, and high heel over the knee boots. And, of course, big hoop earrings. Because hoops make everything better.
Even if you’re just running errands or working from home, ditch the sweats and put on something that makes you feel amazing. It’s an instant mood booster.
A little retail therapy to freshen up your spring wardrobe helps too! Check out the new spring collection at my fav boutique Hibiscus & Vine to see some colorful new pieces that are perfect to brighten up your wardrobe for spring!
And don’t forget your lipstick and mascara! I’m convinced that a swipe of color on your lips and some volume in your lashes can turn your whole day around. Try a bright berry or red lip to brighten your face and bring some warmth to these gray winter days. (You can shop my favorite brands of mascara here!)
2. Move Your Body—Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
I know, I know. When it’s freezing outside, the last thing you want to do is work out. But movement isn’t just about burning calories—it’s about boosting your mood. Exercise releases endorphins, fights fatigue, and gives you that extra pep in your step that winter zaps away. In fact, despite the fact that I had ZERO motivation, I made it to the gym every single day this week, and I felt SO much better for it!
Start small:
✔️ A 10-minute walk
✔️ Some gentle yoga or stretching
✔️ A quick dance session in your kitchen (because, why not?)
Just move. Your body (and your mind) will thank you.
Here’s another tip. Find a group of women to work out with who will motivate you! On days that I am feeling “meh”, I know that my bootcamp buddies will be there to get me through my workout! Not only do they motivate me, but we have a great time together!
3. Nourish Your Body with Foods That Fuel
Winter has a way of making us crave comfort foods—and while there’s nothing wrong with that, too much sugar and processed food can leave us feeling even more sluggish. Instead, focus on high-protein, nutrient-dense foods that give you energy and keep you feeling full longer.
Some of my go-to’s:
🥑 Eggs & avocado toast
🍗 Lean proteins like chicken, turkey, and salmon
🥗 Big, colorful salads
🥜 Nuts & Greek yogurt for snacks
We will talk more about nutrition in our Summer Slim down Challenge starting March 10! Look for details on this coming soon!
4. Get Outside (Yes, Even When It’s Cold)
Sunlight = Vitamin D = A Happier You.
Even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, getting fresh air can completely reset your mood. Bundle up, step outside, and breathe in that crisp winter air. Your mind needs it.
5. Shift Your Mindset
A little perspective goes a long way. Instead of focusing on how much you hate winter, try reframing it. What’s one thing you can look forward to? Spring fashion? A weekend getaway? A new fitness challenge?
How about treating yourself to a Hydrafacial at the Rejuvenation Center in Wheeling? That’s a great way to beat the winter blahs, exfoliate dry winter skin and get your glow on for spring!
